Theatre and Arts Health and Safety

Who is responsible for Health and Safety in Theatre and Arts venues?

The employer - The Health and Safety At Work act states that Health and Safety of employees is the responsibility of the employer. Whilst some employers may choose to delegate certain duties in health and safety the ultimate legal duty will remain with the employer - this will be the CEO of the company you work for. Where any theatre or arts space enlists the help of volunteers for any duties these persons are classed as employees under health and safety law.

What do Theatres and Arts venues have to do under Health and Safety Law?

In the same way as any other place of work all Hazards must be risk assessed and the level of harm controlled to as low a level as reasonably practicable. There are a number of key pieces of Health and Safety law which apply as well as codes of practice some of which have legal status. As well as health and Safety at work law Theatres and Arts venues who invite members of the public onto their premises must ensure they ensure the safety of people who are unfamiliar with the many hazards in your venue.

Prior to working in Health and Safety Kate gained a degree level qualification and 10 years experience working in the theatre industry, having worked as tech and designer in booth producing and receiving houses, the hazards and suitable controls of these environments are well understood.
